About the Talk Infrastructure investment as a booster for economic growth is an important part of US President Barack Obama’s stimulus package. In this talk, Dr Crescenzi will look at the European experience in this area and discuss the impact of transport infrastructure investment on the development patterns of the EU regions. Based on the results of recent LSE research, Dr Crescenzi will suggest that infrastructure investment may have potentially detrimental effects on less dynamic areas and discuss the need to consider infrastructure policies within the framework of balanced strategies also targeting human capital and innovation.
About Dr Riccardo Crescenzi Riccardo is Programme Director of the MSc in Local Economic Development and Research Affiliate with the Spatial Economics Research Centre at the LSE. Before joining the LSE, Riccardo was a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute (Florence). He was also a visiting scholar at the London School of Economics and at the University of California, Los Angeles. Past research and academic awards include the Royal Geographical Society Best Master Dissertation Prize, the Italian Regional Science Association Prize G.Leonardi for the best PhD Dissertation and the joint Italian National Accademia dei Lincei & British Academy for the Humanities and the Social Sciences research fellowship. His research is focused on regional economic development and growth, innovation and EU development policies analysis. He has published in international journals, such as Growth and Change, Regional Studies, The Journal of Economic Geography and The World Economy. His teaching focuses on the economics of local and regional development.
