AFLSE DFW: February 2010 Newsletter

Dear Reader,

The DFW chapter of the Alumni & Friends of The London School of Economics has officially resumed its schedule of mixers and has planned some fun, new events for 2010.  As described in greater detail in the articles linked below, we will hold in February a Third Thursday mixer on the 18th at our old haunt, The Londoner Addison, and we are holding our first-ever Rugby Day on Saturday the 27th, a FREE event for all of our families.  With regard to the Third Thursday this month, we would love for you to attend if you can as this will be the only Dallas-side mixer until April.  In March, we will hold our first Third Thursday in Tarrant County... look for details in your March newsletter.

On a personal note, I would like to thank those who attended our 2009 mixers and Bon Voyage Party.  It was great to meet fellow North Texas alumni, welcome alumni who had recently moved to the Metroplex, and to send off local students who began their studies this past fall at The LSE.  Specifically, I would like to thank Zach Eccleston and Dominic Harwood for their regular support and encouragement.  Also, I'd like to thank Mark & Matt Caldwell and Dr. Gordon Peterson.  I hope to rely on your continued support in our new year.

Well, here's what we have on tap for February...

This chapter was re-chartered in 2009 with a number of goals, some of which we will pursue this year.  However, certain realities require us to streamline our immediate pursuits.  As you may or may not know, we are unable to obtain lists of alumni living in North Texas and Oklahoma from The LSE due to British privacy laws.  This means that we rely on alumni finding us.  We have devoted a tremendous amount of time trying to scout for alumni using Facebook.  This year, we will add LinkedIn to that cause.  And, I have personally invested quite a bit of time during the past six months working with our current and past AFLSE presidents, Elizabeth Halpern and Leon Desbrow, and others in launching a national membership initiative entailing the overhaul of our website and marketing.  Our organization is indeed fortunate to enjoy their stewardship.

Among our top priorities this year will be to spread our events throughout our service area of North Texas and Oklahoma.  In addition to events at various Dallas County sites, look for events in Tarrant, Colling, and Denton Counties as well as in Oklahoma--which has a surprising number of LSE alumni for whom no efforts have been previously made.  Furthermore, I have made it a personal priority to extend our outreach to our families through events such as the upcoming Rugby Day and a Family Picnic and Cricket Exhibition planned for May.

As always, I welcome your ideas and assistance.  My favorite aspect of my chapter chairmanship is the social interaction.  Please don't hesitate to email me at Dallas@AFLSE.org our simply pick up the phone and dial me directly at 214 287-5207.

Warmest regards,

Bill Blake
Chairman, AFLSE DFW
