AFLSE holiday mixer

REMINDER:
Our LSE alum holiday mixer will take place this coming Tuesday, December 8 from 6.30pm at The Hudson on Crescent Heights. Tix are ; $15 in advance and $20 at the door. This event is in conjunction with several Ivy-type business schools. Here is the weblink http://www.aflse.org/article.html?aid=1126
If you possibly can, please also bring a gift for a child to be donated to charity. The charity is called Women in Distress and targets mothers living with AIDS below the poverty line. Last year the gifts donated to this charity were the ONLY holiday gifts these children received. This year, the charity has had huge funding cuts, but the list of recipients has quadrupled. Here are people truly bearing the brunt of our economic downturn.
As a parent, I am sure these children are living under terrible stress and that stress would be somewhat alleviated if they feel there are people in the wider community who care. Also, I know that every middle class kid in this city has presents sitting in their cupboards which they have never even opened or played with - if you have one such cupboard, please use this as an opportunity to empty it. We would also like to be able to give a gift to the mothers. If you have been given a nice gift which you do not personally care for, this would be a meaningful way to dispose of it. (Remember - the holidays are in part about exchanging gifts, and what that means is tearing off the tag from last year addressed to you, and putting on a new tag addressed to someone else.) Alternatively, we would also gratefully receive a grocery store gift card as these mothers literally do not have enough money for groceries. If you wrap your gift, please indicate the appropriate age/gender of the recipient.
If you would like to donate a gift, but cannot make it to the mixer, please contact Elizabeth on la@aflse.org to arrange pick up/drop off.
This is the only charitable effort we have made this year, so please do what you can.
December 19 is our family-friendly Santa Brunch starting at 10am. If you would like to bring the children in your life, please email Elizabeth at la@aflse.org and you will receive the exact address (it's in Laurel Canyon).
