Philadelphia AFLSE Chapter Newsletter- May 2009

Dear Reader,

Hi, I am Moira Conway, the new leader of the Philadelphia AFLSE chapter. I wanted to introduce myself and let you know about some upcoming events for our chapter.

I grew up here in Philadelphia and am glad to be back working here. Although, I do often miss being in London! I graduated from LSE in 2005 with an MSc in Culture and Society. Currently, I am a college Geography professor in the Philadelphia area.

I am hoping to increase the number of events in Philadelphia. I would definitely like any input and suggestions all of you have for planning events. We can discuss this at our first happy hour or feel free to e-mail me.

To get started we are going to have a happy hour on Wednesday, May 20 at Gigi from 5-7. Gigi is in Old City on Market Street between 3rd and 4th. I hope that many of you will come out to get reacquainted with other area alumni. Gigi has various drink specials, and food will be provided by the chapter! A link with more information about the event is below.  Please rsvp to Philadelphia@aflse.org if you can attend.

Also, I am planning a Bon Voyage party in August. I hope as many people as possible will come to that!

I have included a letter from the new AFLSE president, Elizabeth Halpern, and myself about the LSE Centennial Fund. Please read it and consider donating. Our chapter will benefit by doubling the amount of money we will have for events.

Thank you and I am looking forward to meeting or seeing you again at Gigi on May 20.

Dear Member:
We have an opportunity to more than double our Chapter funding of $150 per year through an LSE challenge grant if we meet the goal of increasing participation in donations to the LSE Centennial Fund. This will be a much-needed boost to support our meeting locations, the annual alumni lecture, reception, and dinner and membership recruitment and promotion.

It doesn't matter how much we raise but rather how many new contributors AFLSE can bring in. If each of our members can get a fellow alumni or friend to donate even $5, we can meet our goal of 750 new contributors. AFLSE has already reached more than two-thirds of the number we need. We can surely inspire a dozen or so more!

The deadline for contributions is 31 July 2009, so we need you now to take possession, and help us kick the winning goal.

Every shot counts, so make yours count now. Click here for more details and to kick in your contribution:

Let's win this challenge together!
