Dear Reader,
Happy New Year! AFLSE DC is busy planning our 2019 events calendar and will share details as we have them. As always, if you have ideas for events you'd like to attend - or if you'd like to help organize one - feel free to email us.
Our first happy hour of the new year will be held on Monday, January 28th, from 6 - 9 pm at James Hoban's in Dupont Circle.
This is a departure from our standard "3rd Mondays" event to observe Martin Luther King Day on the 21st.
In the meantime, Nadia Hafedh (Engagement Coordinator for the LSE Students' Union) shared the message below asking for LSE alumni who would like to mentor current students who identify as black or minority ethnic (BME).
Please read her message to learn more and email Nadia if you'd like to volunteer. (Please do not reply to this email.):
"The Students’ Union at LSE is launching a new mentoring scheme specifically for students who identify as Black or Minority Ethnic (BME). The scheme aims to connect BME students with alumni from a variety of backgrounds to give professional advice and insight into their industry.
The scheme is in line with the Union’s focus on creating communities amongst alumni and students. The scheme aims to run from February to August 2019 and the Union is looking for willing alumni to sign up as mentors for this scheme.
Below are the criteria for being a mentor:
- In full-time employment or retired
- Make contact within 2 weeks of being matched
- Have at least 1 correspondence per month (including email)
- Including 2 in-person meetings or phone calls/Skype chats (this is as we believe conversations can be very helpful for mentees as they are more open)
- Non-Londoners are welcome to apply to this scheme and can participate through phone calls/Skype chats where necessary
- Did not graduate within the last year
- Mentors can pick between 1 – 3 mentors
- Willing to listen and give professional advice
- Will signpost to services where appropriate (mentors will be given details of the relevant services)
If you are interested in becoming a mentor and believe you match the criteria above then please fill out this very short application form by January 21st at 5pm. Do get in touch if you have any questions. please email me at n.hafedh@lse.ac.uk.
Completing the application form would indicate a declaration of interest but will not be taken as confirmation of participation in the scheme, allowing you to see the training material before making a decision."
See you soon,
Lauren, Scott, and Beth
