Mary Evans: Biography and Current Work
Professor Evans was educated at the London School of Economics and the University of Sussex. After graduate work Professor Evans taught Sociology and Women’s Studies at the University of Kent where she was part of the group that established the first postgraduate degree solely in Gender/Women’s Studies in the UK. In 2005 Professor Evans left Kent and came to the LSE, first as a visiting Fellow and subsequently as a Centennial Professor. Throughout her academic career Professor Evans has always written across disciplinary boundaries, thus writing about Jane Austen and Simone de Beauvoir as well as on feminist theory and studies of various forms of writing: most recently detective fiction. Professor Evans is at present working on issues of ‘moving class’, and in doing this she is working with colleagues at the British Library and the Women’s Library (which has recently arrived at the LSE). Both these libraries have considerable holdings of interviews with people (some verbal, some written) describing their life histories. Many of these life histories speak of the difficulties that people faced in ‘fitting in’. This has always been an important part of the lives of many people but is becoming ever more important with greater social and geographical mobility.
