Dear Reader,

This newsletter contains the following AFLSE Chicago news:

  • Jazz Musicians from Birmingham, U.K. will be visiting Chicago for a collaborative jazz concert series
  • The Ivy Plus Society is hosting a Winter Gala

Our friends at the British American Business Council ("BABC") have invited LSE alumni and friends to attend several jazz concerts featuring musicians from their U.K. Sister City, Birmingham!  Four jazz musicians from Birmingham will be spending a week in Chicago playing with leading musicians on the Chicago scene as part of an innovative exchange project between the twinned cities.  Cover charge for each session is $10.

The project is collaboration between the Chicago Birmingham Contemporary Jazz and Town Hall & Symphony Hall's Jazzlines programme.  The project is supported by Birmingham City Council's Culture Commissioning Service to promote Great International City activity, and Arts Council England's Artists' International Development Fund. Jazzlines collaborated with Umbrella Music Chicago in setting up 3 gigs:

Feb 6th at 10 PM - The Hideout  - 1354 W. Wabansia - http://www.hideoutchicago.com/

Steve Tromans Trio, lead by pianist Steve Tromans and featuring Chris Mapp on bass and Miles Levin on drums, will be playing with top Chicago saxophonist Ken Vandermark. Steve Tromans will be writing new material for this collaboration. Then in the second set Mark Sanders will play an improvised set with Ken Vandermark and Chicago vibes player Jason Adasiewicz.

Feb 7th at  9 PM - The Elastic Arts Center - 2830 N. Milwaukee  http://www.elasticrevolution.com/

Four Birmingham players will join Chicagoans Dave Rempis, James Falzone and Josh Berman to play an improvised concert in various small and large configurations.
