AFLSE Scholarship

The Alumni and Friends of the London School of Economics in the United States (AFLSE) awards at least one scholarship each year to an American citizen or permanent resident of the United States for one year of graduate study at the London School of Economics. The scholarship usually covers full tuition fees.

Selection of scholarship recipients is based on academic merit and financial need, with no restrictions as to age, field of study, or degree being sought. The scholarship is available to students attending the LSE for the first time or who previously have enrolled in LSE summer school programs only; current and former LSE students are not eligible to apply.

The AFLSE does not have a separate scholarship application. To be considered for the scholarship, prospective students must first apply for admission to the LSE. The LSE will identify candidates who are eligible to apply for the AFLSE scholarship through the Graduate Merit Awards selection process. U.S. citizens and permanent residents who receive Graduate Merit Awards may apply for the AFLSE scholarship by checking the relevant box on the Graduate Support Scheme application. We encourage all interested candidates to apply to the LSE as soon as possible. The AFLSE will select its scholarship recipient(s) from applicants who submit their Graduate Support Scheme applications by late March each year. The AFLSE will endeavor to notify its successful applicant(s) by April 15th.

Other Suggestions for Funding Study at the LSE:
These potential sources were assembled by Tricia Arnold a couple of years ago, and reflect the collected wisdom of a number of people. Please let us know if you have any suggestions to add.

1. Check out the Foundation Center (www.fdncenter.org). They charge a $9.95 per month fee to search for foundation grants to individuals online. However, you should be able to gain access through college and public libraries.

2. Check out the book: Grant Finder: The Complete Guide to Postgraduate Funding Worldwide, Social Sciences published by St. Martin's Press, in the USA, and Macmillan Reference Ltd, in the United Kingdom. ISBN 0-312-22894-5, ISSN 1526-0909 (US), ISBN 0-333-777271 (UK). (These reference numbers relate to the 2000 editions, and these have undoubtedly been updated.)

3. The education section of the Wall Street Journal online is a potential source of reference to other informative websites: online.wsj.com/public/us

4. The websites of other schools and universities are useful resources.
