Speaker, Parag Khanna, is Director of the Global Governance Initiative and Senior Research Fellow in the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation.

Lecture Title: "The Second World: How Emerging Powers are Redefining Global Competition in the 21st Century"

Location: Mortara Center for International Studies located at 1248 36th Street, NW Washington, DC, the corner of 36th and N Streets. The event is being held in the conference room on the main floor (it can been seen as you enter through the main door).

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 at 6:30pm to last until 8:00pm

A wine and cheese reception will follow the lecture.

About Parag Khanna:

Parag Khanna is Director of the Global Governance Initiative and Senior Research Fellow in the American Strategy Program at the New America Foundation. He is author of The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order (Random House, 2008), which has been translated into over ten languages.

During 2007 Mr. Khanna was a senior geopolitical advisor to United States Special Operations Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. From 2002-5, he was the Global Governance Fellow at the Brookings Institution, managing the World Economic Forum's Global Governance Initiative. From 2000-2002 he worked at the Forum in Geneva, where he specialized in scenario and risk planning for Forum member companies and emerging markets. From 1999-2000, Parag was a Research Associate at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, conducting research projects on terrorism, conflict resolution in Central Asia, U.S. policy towards South Asia and defense policy. He served in the foreign policy advisory group to the Barack Obama presidential campaign. He is also on the Executive Committee of the Young Lions of New York Public Library.

Mr.
Khanna holds a Bachelor of Science in International Affairs and a minor in Philosophy from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, a Masters Degree from Georgetown's Security Studies Program, and is earning a PhD in International Relations at the London School of Economics. Having traveled in close to 100 countries, Parag is a member of the Explorers Club and a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations
