Bjorn R. Aune, Ph.D. (1985)
Bjorn received his M.Sc. in Sea-Use Law, Economics and Policy-Making from the LSE in 1985. He then went on to pursue a doctorate at LSE and graduated with a Ph.D. in Sea-Use Law & Policy in 1990. Portions of both his Master’s and doctoral degrees were the bases for articles published in peer-reviewed journals both within the United States and internationally through the United Nations.
After obtaining his doctorate Bjorn became the Director of Seattle Maritime Academy (SMA) in Washington State and served in that position for eight years (1991-99). Among his accomplishments during Bjorn’s tenure at SMA he revamped the entire curriculum of both the deck and marine engineering programs, formalized Federal accreditation of the programs, increased student enrollment, expanded faculty and staff, cultivated external funding and revenue streams and developed a fleet of modern and viable training vessels.
After leaving academia he opted for a vocational-technical career and resumed seafaring – an occupation he had previously pursued and had used to fund his undergraduate and graduate studies in the United States prior to attending LSE. Because of his earlier experience and licensure Bjorn was employed to sail as captain of vessels for several well-known American shipping companies including Crowley Maritime Corporation, Edison Chouest Offshore and Hornbeck Offshore Services. He continues to work in this capacity today.
