Catherine received her M.Sc. in Politics and Government of Russia and the Soviet Union. After LSE, she received her Ph.D. in modern European history at Harvard University.

Catherine is currently associate professor of history at Amherst College. In 2003, she published The Last Revolutionaries: German Communists and Their Century (Harvard University Press).
