Alexander Melamid died March 19th, 2001

An internationally recognized expert in economic geography of the Middle East and North Africa.

Alexander Melamid was born in Freiburg, Germany and received a bachelor's degree from the London School of Economics. 

After working in the oil industry, Alexander Melamid earned a Ph.D in Economics from the New School for Social Research.  He taught briefly at both the Sorbonne and Graduate Faculty at the New School, prior to arriving at NYU.  He taught their from 1957 until he retired as Professor Emeritus of Economics in 1987.

 

He published widely, including Middle Eastern Affairs, American Journal for International Law, and Annals of the Association of American Geographers.

 

Dr. Melamid was born in Freiburg, Germany and earned a Bachelor’s degree at the London School of Economics (1939).
