Edward B. Barbier, Ph.D. (1979)

Ed received his M.Sc. at the LSE in 1980.  He is currently the John S Bugas Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of Wyoming.


Ed was formerly at the Environment Department of the University of York in the United Kingdom and previously served as Director of the London Environmental Economics Centre of the International Institute for Environment and Development and University College London.


Ed has over twenty years experience as an environmental and resource economist, working mainly on the economics of environment and development issues. He has served as a consultant for a variety of national, international and non-governmental agencies, including many UN organizations and the World Bank.


Ed’s applied work has focused particularly on issues of land degradation, wildlife management, trade and natural resources, coastal and wetland use, tropical deforestation, biological invasions and biodiversity loss. He has written or edited fifteen books in the economics of environment and development fields, and has been published extensively in both academic and popular journals. His latest book is Natural Resources and Economic Development, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 2005.
