Mary Evans : Brief Biography
I was educated at the London School of Economics ( where I read Politics ) and the University of Sussex. I taught Sociology and Gender Studies at the University of Kent for thirty five years and am now a Centennial Professor at the LSE, based in the Gender Institute. My research interests have always been in various forms of literature ( from Jane Austen to detective fiction ) and the ways in which these works of the imagination articulate our social concerns and agendas. I’ve written on these subjects, most recently The Imagination of Evil : Detective Fiction and the Modern World.

The LSE has recently acquired the holdings of The Women’s Library, an institution which is almost as old as the LSE. These contain all kinds of material ( some of it literally that ) relating to various forms of politics, and political action, about women.

But in these hugely varied holdings there are all kinds of relationships that might surprise us: the men who campaigned for women’s suffrage and the women who were passionately opposed to it. These kinds of apparent anomalies fascinate me and what I would like to talk about here are the ways in which people make choices about who they are. In particular I am interested in the question which I would describe as ‘leaving home’…what it is like to change social class and move between different political and social groups.
