About the talk:

At a time of economic turmoil, concern about the environment is out of fashion. Yet environmental threats like climate change have not gone away. Is it possible to combine economic growth with good environmental management?  In this talk we will explore how care for the environment is compatible with economic prosperity. We will ask if green investment can kick-start economic recovery, how it may make markets function better and whether it might spawn a new energy-industrial revolution.  We will look at the case of the UK, and how the British government intends to meet its statutory greenhouse gas targets and create a green economy.

About Professor Samuel Fankhauser

Sam has been Co-Director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment since March 2011. Before this, he was a Principal Research Fellow for the Institute, specialising in climate change policy, carbon markets and the economics of adapting to climate change.  Sam is also a member of the UK Committee on Climate Change, a government watchdog that monitors UK climate change policy, and Chief Economist of Globe, the international legislators’ organisation.

A former Deputy Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Sam served on the 1995, 2001 and 2007 assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and before that at the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the World Bank. Sam studied economics at the University of Berne and LSE, and holds a PhD from University College London.
