On a cold winter night and against the background of authentic British food, drinks and decor, Alumni and Friends of LSE met with HM Consul General Judith Slater on December 19 2005 in Houston. She was accompanied by her husband Philip de Waal.

The atmosphere was very relaxed and cordial as all those present introduced themselves. Amongst other things, guests learned that HM Consul General a graduate of Cambridge met Philip while they were both serving as Diplomats in India.

As a reflection of the cordial relationship developing between us, they have graciously offered to host Alumni and Friends of LSE in early 2006.

Several Alumni and Friends of LSE met in Houston for a Mini Debate entitled "Is culture underdeveloped in America?". A passionate presentation by John Charman (BSc Econ 1959) was followed by a heated debate for and against. At the end, arguments against won over arguments for.

Attendees included graduating classes spanning several decades as well as a young student starting at LSE in the Michaelmas term (September) 2005.

Following the excitement created by the April mini debate, other events are planned throughout the year.

LSE Alumni Mixer
January 31, 2005

On January 31st 2005, nearly twenty Alumni and Friends of LSE converged on Houston for a premier of sorts - the first 2005 LSE Alumni Mixer.

In an atmosphere reminiscent of life in London, it was unusually rainy and cold in Houston on the event night whilst British style food and good ale flowed freely at the Black Labrador pub. LSE graduating classes from every decade were represented from the 1950s through the 2000s.

Following the success of the January premier, other events are being planned throughout the year.
